Hi, my name is Chris Ryan Green. I'm from the United States, from Ohio in particular. I'm 45 years old and I'm from the countryside, but I've been living in big cities all my adult life.
I went to university in Cincinnati, OH where I did my bachelor's degree and then I got my master's degree in Carpinteria, CA. And that program was done slightly remotely, where I had to fly to California once a month to take classes for four days out of the month and then go back to Cincinnati, where I lived and worked. After I finished my master's degree in 2009. I then moved to Daegu, South Korea in 2010 and that's where I started my ESL career. And so I lived and worked in Daegu for about 3 years and then after my time there, I then moved to Ho Chi Minh City. Where I continued my work in English as a second language and I still reside in Ho Chi Minh City now.
I've been teaching English as a second language for more than 14 years now and I've done this most of the time face to face. But since COVID, so since 2020-2021, I've also been teaching online. I've been teaching students from the ages of six up through 65 years old, we have quite a wide range of learners here in Vietnam.
And during my time, I've went from being just a teacher, then I was promoted to coordinator and I am currently an academic manager for one of our young learner centers here in Hochman City. For the past about 8 years, I've been working with the British Council. I believe we have some branches in Seoul as well and in Korea.
My educational background, I did a bachelor's degree in biblical studies and then I did a master's degree in humanities. In 2014, I got my Celta and the year after that I got my Celta YL and then in 2018 and 19 I completed the Trinity dip TESOL course, which is equivalent to a DELTA. So that's my educational background and kind of my my academic slash career background.
And when it comes to teaching, I like to take a really interactive approach where the students come first, their needs, their interests come first. I personally really love teaching pronunciation and giving students, helping students, develop their confidence because in my opinion and from my experience, if students lack confidence, they're not going to be able to speak the way that they want to speak and they're not going to really have the motivation to keep going when things might get a little difficult when, for example, learning pronunciation point or grammar point. They won't really have that desire to keep going if they don't have that foundation of self-confidence.
So I really, really enjoy trying to get students to feel really confident in themselves so that when we are in class they feel comfortable sharing their ideas and also so that when we're not in class. They then have the desire and the, you know, the inspiration to go out and, and keep working on, what they want to accomplish.
And I definitely take a more holistic approach to learning language versus rote memorization. So not so much memorizing things, but rather learning how to say words, different vocabulary, different grammar, so that when students actually go to use the language, they're not just trying to pull up something that they've memorized, but they're using the language in a more natural way so that they can just experience life through this other lens of a different language.
And I definitely do this through, taking note of the students interest, getting to know them personally, what they want to do with the language, kind of like their purpose in learning the second language and then using their interest to then build up their language.
I do believe that, students are able to maintain what we study, but if we're using that language in a topic that they are personally interested in.
